A Witness to the Power of Grace

Homily for the Memorial of St. Augustine of Hippo

Paul reminds us that the heart of the Gospel is Christ crucified—God’s wisdom revealed in self‑giving love. The psalm proclaims that God’s plans stand firm forever. Jesus calls us to be ready with lamps lit. On the Memorial of St. Augustine, these readings come together as a portrait of conversion.

Paul speaks today with striking clarity. He tells the Corinthians that he was sent not to impress with eloquence but to proclaim Christ crucified, the power and wisdom of God. Augustine’s life mirrors this discovery. For years he searched for truth in philosophy, rhetoric, ambition, and pleasure. Yet none of it satisfied the deeper longing of his heart. When he finally encountered Christ, he realized that true wisdom is not human brilliance but divine love poured out.

    “The foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.” 

Paul’s words describe Augustine’s conversion perfectly. He learned that God’s wisdom is not an idea to master but a grace that transforms.

The psalm today proclaims that God’s plans stand firm forever. Augustine’s life shows how God patiently guides us, even through detours and delays. His mother Monica prayed for him with perseverance; God worked through her love, through friendships, through questions that would not go away, and through the preaching of St. Ambrose. Augustine’s conversion was not sudden; it was the fruit of God’s steady, faithful work.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. The wise ones keep their lamps filled and ready. Augustine eventually understood that readiness is to a willingness to let God’s grace enter. His famous prayer captures this readiness: “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new.” Once his heart opened, the light of Christ filled his life.

Today, Augustine stands before us as a witness to the power of grace. He shows us that no one is beyond God’s reach, that conversion is always possible. God’s wisdom gently reshapes our lives when we allow our hearts to be ready. His journey encourages us to keep our lamps lit, and trust that God is always drawing us toward deeper life.

So we ask for Augustine’s intercession: that our hearts may awaken to God’s wisdom, that our lives may reflect Christ’s love, and that we may be ready for the grace God desires to give.
