Truth Spoken With Love

Homily for the Memorial of the Passion of St. John the Baptist

Paul tells the Corinthians to consider their own calling. Many were not powerful or influential by worldly standards, yet God chose them so that divine wisdom could shine through their lives. God’s grace works through humility, sincerity, and faithfulness. This is the pattern of John the Baptist’s life.

John’s witness was not rooted in power but in truth. He spoke God’s word with clarity and courage to call people back to the path of life. His fidelity cost him dearly, yet his life remains a beacon of integrity. Paul’s words echo in John’s story:

“God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong.” 

John’s strength was not force; it was faith.

The psalm today proclaims that God’s eyes are upon those who hope in divine love. John lived with that hope. Even in Herod’s prison, even in the uncertainty of his final days, his trust remained steady. His hope was in God’s faithfulness.

In the Gospel, we hear the account of John’s death. It is a stark moment—human pride and manipulation converging around a man whose only desire was to prepare the way of the Lord. Yet the Gospel does not leave us in darkness. John’s witness and courage inspire. His fidelity strengthens us. His life points beyond itself to Christ, the One whose light no darkness can overcome.

Today, John the Baptist stands before us as a reminder that truth spoken with love has lasting power. He encourages us to live with integrity in our own circumstances. He teaches us that faithfulness is measured by trust. And he invites us to believe that God’s grace is at work even when the world seems to move in the opposite direction.

So we ask for John’s intercession: that our hearts may be sincere, our words honest, and our lives shaped by the courage that comes from God.
