Perseverance in Prayer

Homily for the Memorial of St. Monica, Thursday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Tiime

The readings for the Memorial of St. Monica invite us to see how God works patiently, steadily, and faithfully in the lives of those we love. Paul reminds us that God enriches us with grace; the psalm proclaims God’s greatness across generations; and Jesus calls us to live with watchful hearts. Monica’s life becomes a living example of these themes—persevering prayer, steadfast love, and trust in God’s timing.

Paul begins his First Letter to the Corinthians by thanking God for the grace already at work in the community. He sees the faith growing among them. Even though the Corinthians are imperfect, Paul trusts that God will continue to sustain them. This confidence in God’s ongoing work is the spiritual posture of St. Monica.

Monica lived her vocation with a heart anchored in prayer. She carried her son Augustine in her heart long before he ever turned toward God. She prayed through years of disappointment. Yet she never lost hope, because she trusted that God was quietly shaping Augustine’s life in ways she could not yet see. Paul’s words echo her experience:

“God is faithful, and by him you were called.” 

She believed that God’s faithfulness was stronger than Augustine’s wandering.

The psalm today proclaims that one generation tells God’s works to another. Monica’s life embodies that truth. Her faith became the bridge through which Augustine eventually encountered the living God. Her perseverance became the soil in which his conversion took root. Her quiet strength became the foundation of his future holiness.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks about being ready—living with hearts awake and faithful. Monica lived this readiness. She did not know when or how God would answer her prayers, but she remained watchful. Her vigilance was hopeful. She trusted that God’s grace was already moving  Augustine for the moment when his heart would open.

Today, Monica stands before us as a reminder that God works in the long arc of our lives. Her story encourages parents, grandparents, spouses, and friends who carry loved ones in prayer. She teaches us that perseverance is love sustained by grace. She shows us that God’s timing is often slow, but always faithful. And she invites us to believe that our prayers become part of God’s work in the world.

So we ask for Monica’s intercession today. May God strengthen our hope, deepen our patience, and help us trust that grace is already at work in the lives of those we hold close to our hearts.
