Mercy is Perfection

Homily for Tuesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Ahab, David, and Jesus each show us a different angle of the same truth: God can work with any heart that is willing to turn toward Him. In 1 Kings, Ahab finally sees the truth of his sin when Elijah confronts him. His repentance does not erase the consequences, but it reveals something important: even a compromised heart can still turn back to God.

Psalm 51 gives us the words of that turning. “A contrite heart you will not spurn.” God does not ask for perfection of performance—only honesty of heart.

And then Jesus brings us to the heart of discipleship in Matthew: “Love your enemies.” He is not asking us to approve wrongdoing. He is asking us to refuse to let another person’s sin shape our heart. To love as the Father loves is to remain whole, undivided, generous even when wounded.

For us in community, this often means the small daily choices: Letting go of quiet resentments,
Praying for those who trouble us, Returning quickly to truth and mercy.

This is the “perfection” Jesus speaks of—not flawlessness, but a heart shaped by the Father’s mercy rather than by our hurts. When St. Luke concludes the Sermon on the Plain, he alters the last statement – Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful.

May the Lord give us hearts that turn quickly, forgive freely, and love without shrinking.
