Homily for Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

In 2 Kings, the departure of Elijah is dramatic—chariots, whirlwind, mantle. Yet the heart of the story is not the spectacle but the quiet fidelity between Elijah and Elisha.

Three times Elijah tells his disciple to stay behind; three times Elisha responds with unwavering loyalty. His perseverance is not loud, not self‑advertising. It is the quiet steadfastness of one who knows where God is leading him. And when the moment of transition comes, Elisha receives not the whirlwind, but the mantle—a simple, ordinary garment that becomes the sign of extraordinary grace. God’s power is entrusted to him in something humble.

This is the same movement Jesus teaches in Matthew 6: “When you give alms… when you pray… when you fast…”—do it in secret, in the hidden room of the heart, where only the Father sees. The true disciple is not formed by applause but by interior fidelity.

Psalm 31 echoes this theme: “You hide them in the shelter of your presence… You keep them safe from strife.” The psalmist knows that God’s most tender work happens away from the noise of the world. The Lord guards the heart that seeks Him quietly, faithfully, without needing to be noticed.

This is the same shelter Elisha sought when he refused to leave Elijah’s side. It is the same shelter Jesus invites us into when He says, “Go to your inner room.” It is the same shelter the psalmist praises with gratitude.

We will all depart this world one day. There will be no fiery chariots, but we look forward to the day when we will be hidden in the presence of God.
