Honoring the Dignity of All of Creation

Homily for Wednesday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time

Paul speaks today of living with a freedom of heart. He reminds us that “the time is running out,” to help us focus on what truly matters. Paul invites us to hold the things of this world lightly so that our hearts remain open to God’s grace. This openness becomes the soil in which love grows.

Psalm 45 offers a beautiful image of human dignity. It speaks of the splendor that comes from God’s blessing, the radiance that shines through a life shaped by grace. This psalm reminds us that each person carries a beauty given by God, a beauty that calls forth reverence and care.

In the Gospel, Jesus proclaims blessings that reveal the heart of discipleship. He blesses the poor, the hungry, the sorrowful, and those who seek justice. These blessings show us that God’s gaze rests tenderly on those who struggle, and that the Kingdom grows wherever compassion takes root. Jesus invites us to live with this same gaze.

Today we remember St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest whose ministry embodied these readings with remarkable clarity. Serving in Cartagena, he met enslaved Africans arriving on ships in conditions of great suffering. He greeted them with food, medicine, comfort, and friendship. He learned their languages, honored their dignity, and called himself “the slave of the slaves forever.” His life shows us what Paul describes: a heart free enough to love without hesitation. His witness shows us what the psalm proclaims: the beauty of a life shaped by grace. His compassion shows us what Jesus blesses: a heart that stands with the poor and brings hope.

As we continue the Season of Creation, Peter Claver’s witness also invites us to widen our circle of care. Just as he honored the dignity of every person, we are invited to honor the dignity of all creation—to see the world as God’s gift, to care for what is fragile, and to let compassion guide our choices.

May our hearts remain open to God’s grace, Christ’s compassion, and may our service honor the dignity of every person and every part of creation entrusted to our care.
