God Is With Us

Homily for the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today we celebrate the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus, the mother of the Church, and a gentle companion in our life of faith. The Scriptures do not record the story of her birth; it comes to us from the early Christian text known as the Protoevangelium of James, which cherished the memory of Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, and the joy that surrounded her arrival. The Church receives this tradition because it expresses a deep truth: Mary’s life is a gift prepared by God, a life through which grace enters the world.

Micah speaks of a child who will be born in Bethlehem, one who will shepherd God’s people with strength and tenderness. Mary’s birth is part of this promise. Her life becomes the doorway through which God’s saving plan unfolds. She is the one who will welcome the Word, carry the Word, and bring the Word into our human story.

Psalm 13 gives us a simple and beautiful prayer: “I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me.” Mary’s life is a song of gratitude. From her earliest days, she stands as a sign of God’s goodness. Hers is a life shaped by grace. She is the exemplar of one whose heart is open to God’s call.

Matthew’s Gospel offers us the genealogy of Jesus. It is a long line of names, generations upon generations, each one part of the story that leads to Christ. Mary stands at the heart of this story. Through her, God’s promise becomes flesh. Through her, the hope of Israel becomes the hope of the world. Through her, God’s love enters our human family.

Today’s feast also shines gently within the Season of Creation. The theme this year is Living Water, and Mary’s birth invites us to reflect on the gift of life itself. Mary’s life flows into the life of Christ, and Christ becomes the living water that renews the world. As we honor Mary, we also honor the God who gives life to all creation—who nourishes the earth, sustains every creature, and invites us to care for the world with reverence.

Mary’s birth is a sign of hope. It reminds us that God prepares the way for grace long before we see it. It reminds us that God’s love is patient, gentle, and faithful. And it reminds us that every person is held in God’s care.

So today we give thanks for Mary. We ask for her intercession as we begin this Season of Creation. May her openness to God inspire our own openness. May her trust strengthen our trust. And may her life help us see the world as God’s gift—alive, blessed, and filled with the promise of renewal.
