Wisdom Aligns One with God's Ways

Homily for Tuesday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

The Book of Proverbs is used sparingly in the lectionary, two or three times only. It is often paired up with Psalm 119, one of ten acrostic psalms in the Book of Psalms. Acrostic psalms use each letter of the Hebrew alphabet in order. In Psalm 119, each set of eight verses begins with the same letter of the alphabet and contains one of eight synonyms for the word “law,” (precepts, commands, testimonies, commandments, statutes, judgments, way).

The Book of Proverbs often feels like a quiet room in Scripture—its wisdom offered not through stories but through brief, concentrated insights. Today’s passage reminds us that the human heart, with all its plans and impulses, is gently held within the larger movement of God’s grace. “The LORD’s hand is upon the heart,” shaping it toward life, justice, and compassion. Proverbs teaches that wisdom is not cleverness nor great knowledge; it is the steady alignment of our choices with God’s ways, especially in how we treat one another and how we care for the world entrusted to us.

Psalm 119 echoes this desire. The psalmist asks to be taught, to be guided, to walk the path of God’s commandments with a willing heart. There is a beautiful humility here: wisdom is not something we seize; it is something we receive. In these days of the Season of Creation, this prayer becomes especially meaningful. We ask the Lord to shape our hearts so that our daily actions—small, ordinary, even hidden—become part of the healing of creation. Wisdom becomes ecological: a way of living that honors the earth, cherishes its gifts, and protects the vulnerable who depend on it.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that those who hear the word of God and act on it are his family. He draws us into a relationship defined not by blood but by responsiveness. Wisdom, then, is not abstract reflection; it is the lived expression of God’s word in the choices we make. When we listen deeply—like soil receiving seed—we become part of Christ’s household, committed to the flourishing of all.

As we continue through this Season of Creation, perhaps today’s readings invite us to a simple practice: to let God shape our hearts so that our actions, even the smallest ones, reflect care for the earth and compassion for one another. Wisdom grows quietly, like a seed, but it bears fruit that blesses all creation.
