Trust
Homily for Thursday of the 2nd Week of Lent
The word that strikes me in today’s readings from Jeremiah is “trust.” Jeremiah specifically calls us to trust: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.” Psalm 1, our response to the reading, celebrates the person who lives out a life that puts trust in God and God’s law. The Gospel story tells about a man who has placed his trust in wealth and prosperity rather than following the covenant law that mandates care for the poor.
You might let the word “trust” surface at small moments throughout this day:
When you feel tension or find yourself in a hurry: slow down and trust God’s pace.
When you’re tempted to rely only on your own strength: trust in God’s strength instead.
When you notice blessings or stability: be grateful and trust in God’s constancy.
When you face uncertainty or discomfort: place your trust in the comfort that the Gospel offers.
A mantra that might help can be used as we are mindful of our breathing today. As you inhale, say “Lord, You are my strength.” As you exhale: say “I place my trust in you.”
Let your trust in God’s care for you overcome any difficult moment you encounter today.
