The Truth of the Resurrection

Homily for Saturday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

The Gospel reading presented for our reflection today serves as a reassurance and affirmation of the existence of life after death. In the Gospel, Jesus is quizzed by the Sadducees about life after death. Through the teachings of Jesus, we are enlightened that those deemed worthy shall transcend mortality and embrace a new existence akin to that of spiritual beings. No longer bound by the limitations of death, we shall be reborn as children of God.

In the eternal realm of heaven, the focal point of our existence will shift from the institution of marriage to a more inclusive bond of brotherhood and sisterhood. In heaven, notions of gender and nationality will become inconsequential, as all individuals shall stand as equals in the presence of God. This resplendent promise of a renewed life, intertwined with the divine, inspires hope amidst the perplexities and tribulations of our earthly existence.

We find solace in the profound understanding that God supremely governs all aspects of creation. He reigns as the God of the living, maintaining ultimate control over the intricate unfolding of existence. Indeed, it is inevitable that in the complexities of life, goodness shall inevitably triumph over evil.

Let us focus on this Gospel narrative, directing our attention away from trivial matters of our day-to-day existence. While pursuing fulfilling relationships in our present earthly sojourn holds significance, Jesus urges us never to lose sight of the importance of nurturing our relationship with God. Through this spiritual connection, we secure our place among those who shall rise on the final day, embracing the glory of everlasting life.
