The Crown of Humility

Homily for the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary

On the octave of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary.

Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord entering the temple from the east — the same direction from which it once departed. The vision is radiant, but its meaning is tender: God desires to dwell with the people of Israel once again, and we hear once again that God’s love is stronger than their failures. The Lord says, “This is where I will dwell among the children of Israel forever.” It is a promise of presence, of nearness, of communion. Mary’s Queenship rests on this very truth: God chooses to dwell with us, and Mary is the first to welcome that dwelling fully and without reserve.

The psalm describes what happens when God’s presence returns: kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. These are the fruits of a heart aligned with God. Where God dwells, reconciliation grows. Where God reigns, peace becomes possible. Mary’s Queenship is about the harmony of a heart completely open to God’s will.

Jesus warns His disciples against the temptation to seek titles, honors, or recognition. The greatest in the Kingdom is the one who serves. The one who humbles himself is the one who is lifted up.

This is Mary’s path. Her Queenship is born from her humility. She is Queen because she first became the lowly handmaid. She reigns because she first surrendered. She is exalted because she never exalted herself. Her life is the living answer to Jesus’ teaching. Mary’s Queenship is a gentle reminder that true greatness in the Kingdom is quiet, hidden, and rooted in love. The Gospel teaches us that we can attain the same greatness through prayer, through service, and through fidelity that is often unseen but deeply fruitful.

Mary’s Queenship is not distant from our lives; it is the crown placed upon the very virtues we strive to live: humility, obedience, charity, and trust. Today’s readings offer a simple encouragement: God still desires to dwell among His people. God still enters the temple of the heart and still raises up the lowly crowning humility with grace. Ezekiel shows us God returning. The psalm shows us what God’s presence brings. Jesus shows us how to live in that presence. Mary shows us what it looks like when a human heart receives it fully. May her Queenship draw us into the same humility, the same openness, the same quiet joy of belonging entirely to God.
