Signs of God's Presence

Homily for Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, Jesus sounds almost frustrated. He points out that people can look at the clouds and predict rain, or feel the wind and know that heat is coming. They can read the signs of nature with remarkable accuracy. Yet they struggle to read the signs of God's presence and action in their own lives.

The question the Gospel places before us is simple: What is God doing among us right now, and do we recognize it?

Saint Paul gives us part of the answer in the first reading. The signs of God's presence are not always dramatic. Often they appear in the ordinary virtues of Christian life: humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. When these qualities are present, the Holy Spirit is at work. When a community remains united despite differences, when forgiveness triumphs over resentment, when people continue to care for one another through sickness, weakness, and age, God is revealing his presence.

Paul grounds all of this in a series of beautiful affirmations: "one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all." Unity is not something we create by our own efforts. It is a gift we receive and then nurture through charity and mutual respect.

The responsorial psalm asks, "Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord?" The psalmist proclaims that it is the one with clean hands and a pure heart. The person who seeks God learns to recognize God's fingerprints everywhere and gradually acquires the wisdom to interpret the deeper meaning of events.

Today we also remember St. John of Capistrano. Living during a time of turmoil and uncertainty, he devoted himself to preaching reform, reconciliation, and fidelity to the Gospel. He knew that every age presents signs that must be interpreted in the light of faith rather than fear.

As we gather around this altar, perhaps we might ask for the grace that Jesus desires for his listeners: not merely the ability to understand the weather around us, but the wisdom to recognize the movements of God's Spirit within us and among us. For the Lord continues to speak through the circumstances of our lives, through the people he places in our path, and through the quiet work of grace that is unfolding even now.
