Rooted in Prayer, Mercy and Trust

Homily for Saturday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

I am sure you are familiar with the metaphor that compares certain moments in life as a slippery slope. Today, a quiet thread runs through the readings: the Lord keeps us steady when the path of our world becomes slippery.

Jude speaks to a community unsettled by confusion and false teaching. His counsel is wonderfully simple: stay rooted in prayer, mercy, and trust in the One who can keep you from falling. Jude reminds us that God’s grace is not fragile. It is the ground beneath our feet. His closing blessing—entrusting us to the One who can “present us with great joy”—is a reminder that perseverance is not our achievement but God’s gift.

Psalm 63 gives that same truth a voice of longing. The psalmist thirsts for God not because God is absent, but because the soul knows where its true rest lies. In the early morning, before the day’s demands begin, we can echo that prayer: “Your kindness is a greater good than life.” When we pray this way, we rediscover that our deepest desire is not for success, clarity, or control, but for communion, for a relationship with God.

In the Gospel, Jesus stands before leaders who question His authority. He does not argue; He simply reveals their unwillingness to face the truth. His authority is not defended—it is lived. It flows from His union with the Father. For us, too, the most credible witness we offer is not explanation but fidelity: the quiet, steady coherence of a life rooted in God.

So on this Saturday morning, as we prepare to enter the Lord’s Day, we might let these readings draw us back to the essentials: to faith, to prayer, to mercy, and to the humble confidence that God is able to keep us from stumbling. If we remain in His love, He will do the rest.
