Revelation and Responsibility

Homily for Wednesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

The readings today invite us to reflect on two gifts that God has given us: revelation and responsibility.

In the first reading, St. Paul speaks with wonder about the mystery that has been revealed in Christ. For generations, God's full plan remained hidden. Now, through Christ, it has become clear that all peoples are called into the same covenant of grace, heirs to the same promise, members of the same body. What Paul received was not merely information; it was a glimpse into the very heart of God. The God whom Israel had known and loved was now gathering all humanity into one family through Christ.

That theme of revelation continues in the Gospel. Jesus reminds his disciples that knowledge brings responsibility. The steward who understands the master's will is expected to live accordingly. Gifts carry obligations. Privileges carry duties. The more we have received, the more faithfully we are called to respond.

Between these readings, the Church gives us a beautiful responsorial canticle, and it is worth noticing that it comes not from the Book of Psalms but from the prophet Isaiah. The refrain proclaims: "You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation." It is a vivid and hopeful image. Salvation is not something we create through our own efforts. It is God's gift, flowing endlessly like a spring of fresh water. We are invited to come and drink deeply.

Perhaps that image helps us understand both Paul and the Gospel. The mystery revealed to Paul is one of those springs of salvation. God's grace has been poured out upon the world. But once we have drawn from that spring, once we have tasted the goodness of God's mercy, we cannot live as though nothing has changed. We become stewards of the gift we have received.

Many of us have spent years drawing water from those springs through Scripture, prayer, the Eucharist, and the countless ways God has sustained us through life. The Lord's question today is not whether the spring is still flowing. It is. The question is whether we continue to draw from it with gratitude and then share its life-giving water with others.

As Isaiah reminds us, the proper response to God's saving love is joy. And as Jesus reminds us, the proper response to God's gifts is faithful stewardship. May we draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation and, having received so much, use those gifts wisely and generously in the service of God's people.
