Return For I Am Your Master

Homily for Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah speaks to a wounded people, scattered by their own infidelity. Yet the Lord’s first word is not reproach but invitation: “Return… for I am your master.” God gathers not by force but by fidelity—His fidelity, not ours. He promises shepherds who will feed with knowledge and understanding, and He envisions a Jerusalem so filled with His presence that no one will need to remember the ark; His own nearness will be enough.

This is a gentle reminder that the Lord never tires of drawing us back. Even when our hearts feel scattered—by worry, age, responsibility, or sorrow—He gathers us again into a place of peace.

The second passage from Jeremiah deepens the theme: God not only gathers but guards, shepherds, and restores. The prophet describes a people whose mourning is turned into dancing, whose sorrow becomes joy. It is a beautiful image for consecrated religious and lay faithful alike: God does not simply repair; He renews.

For those who serve others, this promise is a quiet encouragement. God sees every hidden act of care, every small kindness, and He folds them into His work of restoring joy to His people.

Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the sower brings the readings to their fulfillment. The Word of God is always fruitful, but the human heart must receive it. Some hearts are distracted, some discouraged, some choked by anxieties. Yet some hearts—open, patient, persevering—become rich soil.

Today, let the Lord gather your scattered thoughts, restore your joy that may have dimmed and let His word sink quietly into the soil of our day. Fruit does not appear instantly. But the Lord promises that when His word is welcomed, it yields thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold—far more than we could ever produce by our own strength.

“Lord, gather our hearts, restore our joys, and let Your word bear fruit in us.”
