I AM the Son of God
Homily for Friday of the 5th Week in Lent
Yesterday, we examined our covenant relationship with God. We find ourselves two chapters later in today’s Gospel text. The arguments that the Jewish leaders have turned into a plot, a whispered conspiracy which will culminate a week from today in the execution of Jesus on a day we have been taught to think of as “good” – Good Friday.
Throughout each day of our Lenten journey, we have been trying to remain mindful of the great gift that God has given us through the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. We refer to it as the Paschal Mystery. Today we hear Jesus boldly say, “I AM the Son of God.” Let this be our mindfulness trigger today. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we too can claim to be a son or daughter of God. Reminding ourselves of this fact throughout the day is a great way to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as we run to the finish life of our race toward eternal life.
