God is There Even in the Darkest Moments

Homily for Wednesday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time

Job speaks today from a place many of us recognize: that experience of standing before the mystery of God and feeling small, unheard, even overwhelmed. “If I summoned him and he answered me, I would not believe he was listening to my voice.” Job is naming the truth that sometimes creation feels vast, God feels hidden, and our prayers feel like they fall into silence.

Psalm 88 echoes that same cry. It is one of the bleakest prayers in Scripture, yet it is still a prayer. Even in darkness, the psalmist keeps calling out. That persistence is itself an act of faith. In these final days of the Season of Creation, we remember that creation also prays in its own way—groaning, longing, waiting for renewal. Our own weariness becomes part of that larger chorus.

Into this honest landscape, Jesus speaks in the Gospel with a clarity that is almost startling. Three people approach Him with enthusiasm, but Jesus responds with the cost of discipleship: no guaranteed security, no delayed commitment, no divided heart. Following Him means stepping into a life where we trust God even when the path feels uncertain.

This is where St. Jerome helps us. Jerome spent his life wrestling with Scripture—its challenges, its mysteries, its demands. He knew that the Word of God is not always comforting at first glance. But he also knew that staying with the Word transforms us. Jerome teaches us that discipleship is about letting the Word shape our lives one day at a time.

So in this last week of the Season of Creation, we walk with Christ even when the way feels unclear. We pray even when the answers feel distant. We care for creation even when the work feels slow. And like Jerome, we let the Word of God steady us when everything else feels fragile.
