Clare's Contemplative Fire

Homily for the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi

Today the Franciscan family pauses before the radiant simplicity of St. Clare, whose life shows us what it means to belong wholly to Christ. The readings chosen for her feast form a gentle dialogue of love: God calling us into intimacy, and Christ inviting us to remain in that intimacy with steadfast fidelity.

Hosea gives us a striking image: God leading His beloved into the desert to speak to her heart. Clare lived this mystery in the quiet of San Damiano. Her enclosure was not an escape from the world but a place where the Lord could speak clearly, tenderly, and without interruption. She trusted that the God who calls us into solitude also fills that solitude with a promise of fidelity and growth in knowledge of the Lord. “I will espouse you in fidelity.” “You shall know the Lord.”

Clare allowed these words to shape her identity. She understood herself as one who belonged to God — not in theory, but in daily practice, in the rhythm of prayer, silence, and charity.

In the Gospel, Jesus invites His disciples to remain in Him. He does not ask them to accomplish great feats; He asks them to stay close. Clare embraced this invitation with a clarity that still steadies us. Her life was a long, faithful abiding — a quiet confidence that Christ’s love is enough, and that everything fruitful in our lives flows from staying rooted in Him.

To remain in Christ is to let His joy, His peace, and His compassion become the pattern of our own hearts. Clare’s fidelity shows us that this remaining is not passive. It is a daily choice to let Christ’s love shape our thoughts, our words, and our service.

For the Franciscan family, Clare’s witness reminds us that our vocation begins with availability. Before ministry, before activity, before planning — there is the simple act of being present to Christ. Clare teaches us that prayer is not a pause from our vocation; it is the heart of it. From that heart flows the gentleness, simplicity, and joyful service that mark Franciscan life.

Her life encourages us to let our ministries grow from prayer rather than hurry, choose simplicity over complication, trust God’s fidelity more than our own strength, and to allow our communities to be places where hearts can rest.

Clare’s contemplative fire still warms our Franciscan houses, our chapels, and our shared meals. Her quiet courage reminds us that holiness is steady, faithful, and rooted in love.

As we celebrate her feast, may we ask for the grace to remain in Christ as Clare did — with serenity, courage, and a heart open to God’s whisper. May her example help us live our Franciscan vocation with renewed simplicity and joy, so that Christ’s love may flow through us to all whom we serve.
