Armor of Truth, Righteousness, Faith, Salvation and the Word of God

In today's first reading, St. Paul tells us to put on the armor of God. At first glance, the image sounds military and aggressive. Yet when we look carefully, the armor Paul describes consists of truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the word of God. The Christian does not wage war against people. Our struggle is against whatever pulls us away from God and diminishes the life God wishes to share with us.

That struggle is often quieter than we imagine. It takes place in the heart. Every day we are invited to choose truth over falsehood, forgiveness over resentment, hope over discouragement, and trust over fear. These are the battles most of us face far more frequently than dramatic confrontations with evil.

In the Gospel, Jesus faces opposition as well. The Pharisees warn him that Herod wants to kill him. Yet Jesus refuses to be driven by fear. He remains focused on the mission entrusted to him by the Father. Even as he speaks of the dangers ahead, his thoughts turn toward Jerusalem, and his words become a lament of love: "How many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings."

That image is striking. The One whom Paul presents as a mighty Lord is the same One who longs to gather, protect, and shelter God's people. Christ's strength is revealed not in domination but in faithful, self-giving love.

As we celebrate this Eucharist, perhaps we might ask for two graces: the courage to stand firm in whatever spiritual battles we face today, and the confidence to rest beneath the sheltering wings of Christ, who never ceases to gather us to himself.
