A Meeting in the Storm

Homily for Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah speaks to a wounded people—exiled, discouraged, and convinced their suffering is beyond healing. God’s response is striking: “Your injury is incurable… yet I will restore you.” The Lord does not deny the depth of the wound; He promises a deeper mercy. This is the heart of today’s message: God meets us honestly, heals us patiently, and restores us faithfully.

Psalm 102 echoes that hope. The psalmist cries from affliction, yet trusts that God “will regard the prayer of the destitute.” Even when we feel forgotten, heaven bends toward us.

In the Gospel, Jesus comes to the disciples in the middle of the storm. He does not calm the wind first—He steps into it. Peter walks toward Him, falters, and sinks. But Jesus immediately reaches out His hand. The miracle is not only that Peter walked on water; the miracle is that Jesus never lets go.

St. John Vianney lived this truth. As a parish priest, he saw the wounds of his people—sin, discouragement, fear—and he became a living sign of Christ’s mercy. His confessional was a place where God restored hearts the way He promised through Jeremiah, and lifted souls the way He lifted Peter.

We are urged today to Let Christ meet us in the storm. Let Him touch the wounds we hide. Let Him restore what feels beyond repair.
