A Life Recreated

Homily for the Feast of St. Mary Magdalen

The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene always draws us close to the tender center of the Gospel—the place where human longing meets the transforming love of Christ. Paul tells us today that “the love of Christ impels us,” and Mary Magdalene is one of Scripture’s clearest portraits of a life impelled, moved, and utterly re‑created by that love. In her, we see what Paul means when he says that in Christ we become a “new creation.” The old self—marked by fear, sin, or sorrow—falls away, and a new self rises, shaped by grace.

Psalm 63 gives voice to Mary’s heart. “My soul thirsts for you… my flesh faints for you.” This is not poetic exaggeration; it is the lived experience of a woman who had discovered that only Christ could satisfy the deepest ache of her life. Her longing was not weakness but devotion, a love that kept her standing at the foot of the Cross and brought her to the tomb before dawn.

And then the Gospel: Mary weeping outside the empty tomb, unable to leave the place where she last saw Him. Her tears are the expression of a heart that has learned to love greatly. When Jesus speaks her name—“Mary”—everything changes. The Resurrection becomes personal. The new creation Paul describes becomes flesh in her. She is sent forth as the apostle to the apostles, the first herald of Easter joy.

For us, Mary Magdalene’s witness is both consoling and challenging. Consoling, because it reminds us that Christ meets us personally—speaking our name, entering our sorrow, transforming our past. Challenging, because once He calls our name, we cannot remain where we were. Like Mary, we are sent. We become bearers of hope, witnesses to mercy, people whose lives quietly say, “I have seen the Lord.”

As we celebrate her feast, especially as consecrated religious who know the beauty of a life given wholly to Christ, Mary Magdalene stands as a luminous companion. She teaches us that love is stronger than fear, fidelity stronger than confusion, and grace stronger than every shadow of the past.
