Go to Joseph

Homily for the Solemnity of St. Joseph

Today’s readings draw us into one of the quietest yet most powerful stories in all of Scripture—the story of a man who never speaks a recorded word, yet whose life proclaims the Gospel with astonishing clarity. St. Joseph stands at the crossroads of God’s promises: the promise to David, the promise to Abraham, and the promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ. St. Joseph stands for us as a model of attentiveness to the word of God, both as he heard it from the mouth of an angel and through his care and attentiveness to the incarnate Word of God, Jesus.

In the first reading from 2 Samuel, God makes a breathtaking promise to David: Your house will stand forever. Your kingdom will endure. I will be a father to your heir. This is not just a political promise. It’s a covenant—God binding Himself to His people through a family line. And that promise echoes through the centuries until it reaches a carpenter in Nazareth. Joseph is not a king. He has no throne. He lives far from Jerusalem’s power. Yet Matthew makes it clear: Joseph is the son of David, the living link between God’s ancient promise and God’s new work.

The Psalm sings of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. It’s a reminder that God does not forget what He promises, even when His people do. Joseph’s life is a living testimony to this faithfulness. When everything seems uncertain—Mary’s unexpected pregnancy, the confusion, the fear—God steps in with clarity: Do not be afraid. This child is from the Holy Spirit. You will name him Jesus.

Joseph doesn’t get all the answers. He gets enough light to take the next step. And he takes it.

In Romans, Paul speaks of Abraham’s faith—faith that hoped against hope. Abraham believed God’s promise even when it seemed impossible. Joseph stands in that same tradition. Joseph’s faith is not loud. It is not dramatic. It is steady, obedient, and courageous. It is the kind of faith that changes the world.

Joseph becomes the earthly father of the Son of God—not by biology, but by vocation. His fatherhood is chosen, embraced, and lived with integrity. Joseph’s “yes” allows God’s promise to take flesh in history.

In a world that celebrates noise, Joseph shows the power of silence. In a culture obsessed with visibility, Joseph shows the beauty of hiddenness. In a time of uncertainty, Joseph shows the strength of trust.

Inscribed above the door of the seminary where I began my formation for the priesthood were the words: “Ite ad Joseph.” Go to Joseph. Let this be our mindfulness trigger for today. Joseph’s life speaks to anyone who has ever felt uncertain, overwhelmed, or unworthy of the task before them. He teaches us courage, obedience, humility, and faithfulness. Most of all, Joseph teaches us to be attentive to the word of God in our own lives. Just as God promised Abraham and David that their descendants would continue throughout time, God promises us that whenever we are uncertain of what it is that God is asking of us, all we need do is go to Joseph.
