St. Justus of Trieste
November 2
Saint Justus of Trieste is an early Christian martyr and the primary patron saint of the city and diocese of Trieste, Italy.
Arrested during the Diocletianic persecutions for refusing to sacrifice to Roman gods, he was sentenced to death by drowning with weights in the Gulf of Trieste (typically dated to November 2, 293 AD or 303 AD). According to tradition, his body washed ashore intact and was recovered by a local presbyter (Sebastiano) following a vision, then secretly buried. He is remembered annually on November 3 (adjusted from All Souls' Day on November 2), which is a regional holiday in Trieste where he is regarded as a patron saint. His relics were later moved to a 5th-century basilica and eventually enshrined in the San Giusto Cathedral (Basilica Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire) built atop San Giusto hill in Trieste.
