St. Chiaffredo of Saluzzo
September 7
Saint Chiaffredo of Saluzzo, also known by several variations of his name such as Chaffre, Chiaffredus, Ciafrè, and Godefrid, was a soldier and member of the Theban Legion. He is revered as a martyr and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Chiaffredo was part of the Theban Legion, a Roman legion consisting of Christians, which was stationed in Agaunum (present-day Saint-Maurice, Switzerland) during the 3rd century. As a soldier, he dedicated his life to serving and defending the faith. However, during this time, the emperor Maximian began persecuting Christians, leading to the martyrdom of many members of the Theban Legion. In an attempt to escape the persecution, Chiaffredo fled from Agaunum along with some of his fellow legionnaires. They traveled across the Alps and eventually arrived in Piedmont, located in modern-day Italy. Unfortunately, even in this new territory, their faith was not safe from threat. Chiaffredo's commitment to Christianity and his refusal to renounce his faith led to his eventual martyrdom. In the year 270, near the town of Crissolo in Piedmont, Chiaffredo was executed for his unwavering devotion to Christ. His martyrdom is a testament to his strong belief and dedication to the Christian faith. After his death, Chiaffredo's relics were discovered near Crissolo in 522 and were enshrined there. Later, in 1593, his relics were translated to Revello, Italy, and then in 1642, they were finally transferred to the cathedral of Saluzzo, Italy, where they remain to this day. Although his representation is not specified, Chiaffredo is venerated as a saint and is honored on his feast day, which is celebrated on September 7th. His devout life and martyrdom have made him an important figure in the Catholic Church. Saint Chiaffredo is considered the patron saint of Crissolo, Italy, as well as the cities of Saluzzo, Italy, and its diocese. The diocese of Saluzzo declared him patron in 1516, recognizing his significance in the region. With his unwavering faith and sacrifice, Saint Chiaffredo serves as an inspiration for all Christians to remain steadfast in their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His life and martyrdom continue to be celebrated and remembered, and he is honored as a powerful intercessor for those in need.
