St. Attracta of Killaraght

August 11

Saint Attracta of Killaraght, also known as Abaght, Adhracht, Araght, Athracta, Taraghta, and Tarahata, was born in the 5th century in County Sligo, Ireland. She was the daughter of an Irish noble and from a young age, she felt a strong calling to a religious vocation. However, her family opposed her desire to follow this path.

Undeterred by her family's objections, Saint Attracta made her religious vows to Saint Patrick at Coolavin in Ireland. She then devoted herself to working alongside Saint Patrick in his mission to convert the people of Ireland to Christianity. Her dedication and commitment to this cause were evident, and she played a crucial role in the spread of the faith throughout the land.

After her time working with Saint Patrick, Saint Attracta chose to live as an anchoress at Drumconnell in County Roscommon. During this period, she led a life of solitude and deep contemplation, immersing herself in prayer and furthering her spiritual journey.

Later, Saint Attracta founded a hospice at Killaraght (Cill Attracta) on Lough Gara, which existed well into the 16th century. This hospice became a place of refuge and care, providing assistance to the sick and those in need. Additionally, she established several churches and convents in Counties Galway and Sligo, which were known for their compassionate care of the sick. These convents were strategically built at crossroads so that they could be accessible to a greater number of travelers.

Saint Attracta was renowned for her miraculous abilities and healing powers, becoming widely-known as a miracle worker and noted healer. A well in Clogher, Monasteraden bears her name and was believed to possess extraordinary powers in curing warts and rickets.

During her lifetime, Saint Attracta's influence and popularity were immense, and her reputation only grew in the centuries that followed. Fantastic accounts of her life circulated, capturing the imagination of the people in the Middle Ages. Her exceptional devotion to the faith and her tireless efforts to care for the sick and needy continue to inspire many.

Saint Attracta of Killaraght is celebrated as the patron saint of the city and diocese of Achonry, Ireland, as well as the Men of Lugna. Her feast day is commemorated on August 11th, and some calendars also observe February 9th in her honor. Although there are no known representations of Saint Attracta, her powerful and compassionate legacy lives on.
