The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

September 23

Daily Thought From The Saints

“Love our Lady, and make her loved; always recite the Rosary as often as possible.”

— St. Padre Pio

Daily Scripture Verse

“O, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever.\

1 Chronicles 16:34

Daily Meditation

“Always be impartial and just in your deeds. Put yourself into your neighbor’s Place, and him in yours. And then you will Judge fairly… Frequently, therefore, examine your heart, whether it is so disposed towards your neighbor, as you would have his disposed towards you, were you to change places; for this is the true test.”

— St. Francis De Sales

Daily Catholic Wisdom

Confession is the personal gift of redemption, always unique, to each person, just as each person can accept and apply it.

—Adrienne von Speyr
from her book “Confession”

A Prayer

Rev. Thomas O'Hara, C.S.C.

Lord, you explained the meaning of the parable so the disciples could understand more fully. This day some things may happen that we do not fully understand. But as did the disciples, let us trust you and put our faith in you. Open our hearts and minds so that we, even with our lack of complete understanding, know you are guiding us and leading us this day. We pray this to you our God, forever and ever. Amen.

Matthew 13:20-22

Reading

[Jesus said to his disciples,] “The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.”

Meditation

In both cases the seed begins to grow, but does not bear fruit. In the first, the sun scorches the growth for lack of roots. This is when outside trials make us fall away. In the second case, the growth of the seed is choked by competing growth. This is when our interior desires and fears make us fail, since they run contrary to God’s ways. Thus, the obstacles to discipleship are both outside and inside of us.

Prayer

Lord, You see all things, including the waywardness of my heart. Lead me to work with You in making my heart more fully set upon You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Contemplation…
