The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

October 8

Daily Thought from the Saints

"God writes his name on the soul of every man."

— Venerable Fulton Sheen

Daily Scripture Verse

"Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love."

1 John 4:7-8

Daily Meditation

"Now, may our God be our hope. He Who made all things is better than all things. He Who made all beautiful things is more beautiful than all of them. He Who made all mighty things is more mighty than all of them. He Who made all great things is greater than all of them. Learn to love the Creator in His creature, and the maker in what He has made."

— Saint Augustine

Daily Catholic Wisdom

You have read many stories of conversion to the Catholic Faith. There is as much variety among the descriptions of the ways by which God leads men toward Him as there is among their spiritual and moral characters.

—Dom Pierre-Célestin Lu, O.S.B. (Lu Zhengxiang)
from his book, “Ways of Confucius and of Christ”

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Herbert Yost, C.S.C.

Lord, teach us to be filled with you and emptied of an ego that puts our glory over your glory. Let us be your ambassador. Give us your voice and direct our motives this day that we might produce the fruits of the kingdom. Amen.

The Abbot’s Daily Lectio Divina
Abbot Austin Murphy, O.S.B., St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle, IL

Isaiah 5:3-4

Reading

Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard: What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done? Why, when I looked for the crop of grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes?

Meditation

We must bear fruit in good works. God has given us so many gifts, so as to cultivate us to bear fruit. If we do not bring forth good works, God will hold it against us, as this and other Scripture passages tell us. The fruit might be small but still we must do something and not come empty-handed before the Lord.

Prayer
Lord, help me to bring forth works that glorify You, especially works that contribute to the good of others. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
