The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

October 7

Daily Thought from the Saints

"Let us trust in him who has placed this burden upon us. What we ourselves cannot bear let us bear with the help of Christ. For he is all-powerful, and he tells us: 'My yoke is easy, and my burden light.'"

— St. Boniface

Daily Scripture Verse

"So then, my beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work."

Philippians 2:12-13

Daily Meditation

"What prevents us from receiving more abundant graces from God may be quite simply our not being sufficiently grateful and not thanking him for the graces he has already given us. There is no doubt that if we thank God with all our heart for each grace received, especially for the inspirations [of the Holy Spirit], he will grant us more."

— Fr. Jacques Philippe

Daily Catholic Wisdom

Christian faith is not a system. It cannot be portrayed as a complete, finished intellectual construction. It is a path, and it is characteristic of a path that it only becomes recognizable if you enter on it and start following it.

—Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI)
from his book “Truth and Tolerance”

Daily Journey with the Pope

“The Gospel calls us to “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!” (Mt 3:2) It summons us to a new relationship with God and also entails a different relationship with others and with creation. Safeguarding God’s work is an essential part of the Christian life.”

Pope Francis

A Prayer

Rev. Stephen Gibson, C.S.C.

Lord, on our own we simply do not have the conviction to side-step the negativity that darkens our path. Give us the grace to move through our obstacles with confidence, protection, and generosity. Wherever we are, there is your assurance. Where we fear, there is your light. And where we fall, there is your hand ready to assist. Amen.

The Abbot’s Daily Lectio Divina - 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Abbot Austin Murphy, O.S.B., St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle, IL

Reading

Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Meditation

We share in the foolishness of God whenever others ridicule us for our faith. And we share in the weakness of God whenever we suffer ill treatment at the hands of the powerful. Yet when we are thus foolish and weak in God, we are in fact wiser and more powerful than anyone in the world. We then have Christ, Who is the power and wisdom of God, and this power and wisdom have overcome the world.

Prayer

Give me the patience and courage to suffer ill treatment for Your sake, should that be Your will, for then I will share in Your wisdom and might. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
