The Great Cloud of Witnesses

May 6, 2024

Daily Thought from the Saints

"We must faithfully keep what we have promised. If through human weakness we fail, we must always without delay arise again by means of holy penance, and give our attention to leading a good life and to dying a holy death. May the Father of all mercy, the Son by his holy passion, and the Holy Spirit, source of peace, sweetness and love, fill us with their consolation."

— St. Colette

Daily Scripture Verse

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek. For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith; as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live."

Romans 1:16-17

Daily Meditation

"The glory of a good person is the evidence of a good conscience. Have a good conscience and you will always be happy. A good conscience can bear a great deal and still remain serene in the midst of adversity, while a bad conscience is fearful and easily ruffled. Only be glad when you have done well. Evil persons are never really happy, nor do they feel peace within them; for 'there is no peace for the wicked, says the Lord' (Isa. 48:22). Even though the wicked may protest that peace is theirs and that no evil shall harm them, do not believe them. For God's wrath will suddenly overtake them, and all they have done will be brought to nothing and their plans destroyed."

— Thomas á Kempis

Daily Catholic Wisdom

The devotion to Our Lady is an important element of spiritual life. In our prayers, let us not fail to address her with trust. Mary will not fail to intercede for us with her Son.

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Eric J. Schimmel, C.S.C.

Loving Jesus, as we begin our sixth week celebrating your resurrection, the challenge of maintaining Easter joy is real. You also know from your life on earth the real challenges of maintaining faith and hope. You understand the difficulty of offering love in a world that can sometimes oppose the faith or encourage apathy towards it. Help us feel the support of the Advocate to help us remain faithful to the truth. We ask this in your most Holy Name. Amen.

John 15:26-27

Reading

[Jesus said to his disciples:] “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.”

Meditation

The Holy Spirit testifies to Jesus in our hearts. In turn, we are to testify to Jesus before others. What do we say in testimony? One answer is to speak of why we believe in Christ. What are the reassurances for believing that we have? The Spirit has given us these and, so, we repeat the testimony of the Spirit by sharing these with others.

Prayer

May the Holy Spirit make me a better witness to Jesus. Amen.
