Matthew 5:13

Reading

“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

Meditation

Perhaps the most prevalent use for it in Israel in the time of Jesus was as a catalyst for fire.  A block of salt lay at the base of the community oven that was used to bake bread, the source of most of the calories that these people ingested every day. Once it had lost its catalytic properties, its savor, it was in fact thrown out on to the pathways where it provided traction for those who were walking on the road.

Prayer

Jesus, you came to bring a baptism of fire to the world. May I continue to “set the world on fire” by living your Gospel.

Contemplation…

Daily Thought from the Saints

"If you are suffering from a bad man’s injustice, forgive him—lest there be two bad men."

— St. Augustine

Daily Scripture Verse

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to thy word. With my whole heart I seek thee; let me not wander from thy commandments! I have laid up thy word in my heart, that I might not sin against thee."

Psalm 119:9-11

Daily Meditation

"My God, you know infinitely better than I how little I love you. I would not love you at all except for your grace. It is your grace that has opened the eyes of my mind and enabled them to see your glory. It is your grace that has touched my heart and brought upon it the influence of what is so wonderfully beautiful and fair . . . O my God, whatever is nearer to me than you, things of this earth, and things more naturally pleasing to me, will be sure to interrupt the sight of you, unless your grace interferes. Keep my eyes, my ears, my heart from any such miserable tyranny. Break my bonds—raise my heart. Keep my whole being fixed on you. Let me never lose sight of you; and, while I gaze on you, let my love of you grow more and more everyday."

— St.. John Henry Cardinal Newman

Daily Catholic Wisdom

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary.

—St. Bernard of Clairvaux

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Bill Dorwart, C.S.C.

Almighty and ever-living God, your people long to taste and see the goodness of your love. Bless our hands and our wits that we might become your beacon of hope in a darkened world. Make our voice your own so that your children may savor the presence of your promise and peace revealed in Jesus who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.
