Lectio Divina with Fr. Lawrence

Matthew 5:48

Read

“So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Meditate

Is Jesus asking the impossible of us? How can we be as perfect as God? Unfortunately, the way we use the word perfect in English (meaning – without flaw) is not the meaning of the word in Greek (meaning – whole, complete, mature). Surely, we can be mature adults. In St. Luke’s Gospel we read “Be merciful for God is merciful.”

Prayer

Jesus, I place my hope in you for you are the model of what God asks of me. Teach me your ways. Invest me with your righteousness. Help me to erase sin from my life.

Contemplate…

Daily Thought from the Saints

"Seeing the sun, the moon and the stars, I said to myself, ‘Who could be the Master of these beautiful things?’ I felt a great desire to see him, to know him and to pay him homage."

— St. Josephine Bakhita

Daily Scripture Verse

""The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him." The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord."

Lamentations 3: 24-26

Daily Meditation

"It is inevitable that the barque of Peter will encounter rough sailing. This is why we must stand together in faith and doctrine. Sometimes our morning prayer could easily include the Apostle’s Creed as a reminder of our beliefs."

— Rev. Thomas J. Donaghy

Daily Catholic Wisdom

Open your heart so that the word of God may enter it, take root in it, and bear fruit there for eternal life.

—St. John Vianney

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Terry Ehrman, C.S.C.

Heavenly Father, your Word is active and alive, effective and enlivening. It achieves the end for which you send it. Transformed by your Word and filled with your Spirit, may our words not be empty, but may we imitate you by speaking true words of forgiveness from the heart to those who sin against us. Amen.
