The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

April 16

Daily Thought from the Saints

"The spirit of humility is sweeter than honey, and those who nourish themselves with this honey produce sweet fruit."

— St. Anthony of Padua

Daily Scripture Verse

"And he said, 'Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.'"

Job 1:21

Daily Meditation

"Let anger be guarded against. But if it cannot be averted, let it be kept within bounds. For indignation is a terrible incentive to sin. It disorders the mind to such an extent as to leave no room for reason. The first thing, therefore, to aim at, if possible, is to make tranquility of character our natural disposition by constant practice, by desire for better things, by fixed determination."

— St. Ambrose

Daily Catholic Wisdom

We do not go to Holy Communion because we are good; we go to become good.

—St. John Bosco

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Michael Belinsky, C.S.C.

Jesus proclaims that he is the way, the truth, and the life. Lord, this Easter mystery emboldened your apostles to preach the power of your resurrection from the dead, even to suffer martyrdom for your name's sake. Though few, if any of us, will be asked to die a martyr's death, help us to share the glory of your cross in how we live for others today, for it is our only hope and the way of our life. Amen!

Abbot Austin Murphy, O.S.B., St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle, IL

Luke 11:29-30

Reading

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.”

Meditation

A sign prompts or renews belief in something proposed for our acceptance (e.g., a promise, assurance, message, or person as a representative of God). The people seek a sign, but God gives a sign different from what they expect (and want). They thus turn a deaf ear to it. God still uses signs, but we must be careful in seeking them, for we then tend to be open only to what we expect to hear. Yet God’s ways are more humbling and uplifting than ours.

Prayer

Lord, give me a spirit of humility whereby I can hear what You are calling and encouraging me to do. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
