The Great Cloud of Witnesses

Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

October 31

Daily Thought from the Saints

"Christ Himself is our mouth through which we speak to the Father, our eye through which we see the Father, our right hand through which we offer to the Father. Without His intercession neither we nor all the saints have anything with God."

— St. Ambrose

Daily Scripture Verse

"Bless those who persecute [you], bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all."

Romans 12:14-18

Daily Meditation

"Let the sinner know that he will be tortured throughout all eternity, in those senses which he made use of to sin. I am writing this at the command of God, so that no soul may find an excuse by saying there is no hell, or that nobody has ever been there, and so no one can say what it is like. I, Sister Faustina, by the order of God, have visited the abysses of hell so that I might tell souls about it and testify to its existence."

— St. Faustina Kowalska

Daily Catholic Wisdom

Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth.

—Catechism of the Catholic Church, 159

A Prayer

Rev. Steve Gibson, C.S.C.

Dear Lord, when time drags on and prayers go unanswered; when our hard work seems so futile; when we wonder what difference we’re making, remind us of the mustard seed. Though it appears so insignificant, so incapable of bringing forth life, we know it finds its purpose and serves magnificently. Bless us with great possibilities and increase our faith in your presence in all we do. Amen.

Romans 8:20-21

Reading

For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.

Meditation

The subjection of creation to futility is perhaps due to sin entering the world. But it also describes how God made created things before sin arose, for by nature created things are corruptible. Left to ourselves, we as created things decay, die, and go astray. We are futile in that we cannot find our fulness in and through ourselves. We must hope to find it by sharing in the incorruptible nature of God and God uses this hope to bring us to Himself.

Prayer

Lord, I will never find my rest and fulfillment except in You. Therefore, keep me focused, in hope, on attaining perfect union with You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
