January 2 – Memorial of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen

God our Father, you inspired the church with the example and teaching of your Saints Basil and Gregory. In humility, may we come to know your truth and put it into action with faith and love. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

Daily Thought from the Saints

"Only in Christ can men and women find answers to the ultimate questions that trouble them. Only in Christ can they fully understand their dignity as persons created and loved by God."

— Pope St. John Paul II

Daily Scripture Verse

"But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."

Isaiah 40:31

Daily Meditation

"There is nothing to be dreaded in human ills except sin—not poverty, or disease, or insult, or ill treatment, or dishonor, or death, which people call the worst of evils. To those who love spiritual wisdom, these things are only the names of disasters, names that have no substance. No, the true disaster is to offend God, to do anything that displeases him."

— St. John Chrysostom

Day by Day with Mary, the Mother of God

Have recourse to Mary, in all your necessities. Call her to your assistance, for such is the divine will that she should help in every kind of necessity.

St. Basil

A Prayer from Notre Dame University

Rev. Jim Lies, C.S.C.

Lord Jesus, like John, we confess that we are not the Christ. Yet we long to be voices preparing your way—in our families, in the classrooms and chapels entrusted to us, in the heritage of faith that runs from our ancestors into Holy Cross today. Teach us humility, honesty, and courage to point beyond ourselves, to you, who stand among us, often unnoticed, yet always ready to bring light and life. May our lives testify to your presence. Amen.
