Humility, Trust, and Surrender

Homily for the Solemnity of the Annunciation

As we celebrate the solemnity of the Annunciation, we once again have the opportunity to focus our attention on some of the virtues that are displayed in the blessed mother’s response to God’s initiative.

Mary’s first response is humility. She wonders how the angel’s words could be true since she has not yet lived with her husband, Joseph. This has been the response of many saints and prophets throughout history. When God calls, we often feel that maybe there is some sort of mistake. How can God be calling me when I am so imperfect? Notice the angel’s words that nothing is impossible for God. God can even use us in his kingdom! It is humility that recognizes that we are not perfect, but it is trust in God that believes he can use us anyway.

That brings us to the second virtue; namely, trust. Mary also trusted God. She probably had no idea how difficult her life was going to be if she went along with God’s plan. Mary trusted that God’s plan is holy, even if it includes suffering. We also need that kind of faith. Even though our lives may include many trials and failures, our faith in God can get us through even the worst circumstances. Mary is a model of following God’s will for our lives through great pain and rejection. She stood at the foot of the cross of her son giving us an example of acceptance.

This leads us to the final virtue: Mary surrendered her life to God. She was not only humble and trusting, she also spoke the most beautiful words. “I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” This total surrender was such a beautiful act of worship in the eyes of our heavenly father. As we strive to be disciples of Jesus, we are also called to surrender ourselves to the will of God. Mary demonstrates for us the deepest love and trust. She seeks his will instead of her own.

As we celebrate this feast today, we also join with the rest of the world in praying for peace in the Ukraine and in Russia. As the holy father consecrates both of these countries to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we join in his prayer that violence and destruction may come to an end and that we may live together as brothers and sisters in the Lord.
